Ask Jes - Handling Stress

Dear Jes,

I really appreciate your advice column.  I have been a follower of yours for some time and would like to ask, how does a person get through the stress of life and work?  I used to be able to "handle" stress well and work long hours, however, now I just cannot seem to keep up.  I take good care of myself - generally.  I get a massage when I can, but it doesn’t seem to be enough.  It’s so hard to balance - is there any “magic” bullet?

Dear Stressed,

Thank for the appreciation! The best way to get through the stress of life and work is to learn to breath.  Massage helps release tension and of course going to your local spa sooths the spirit. However, the every day grind can undo a wonderful massage or spa treatment in short order if your body gets stuck in stress mode one hour into your work day.
Taking 6 deep breaths (count them) while placing a hand on your forehead helps the body leave fight or flight mode and return to what I call “right as right” mode. Fight or flight mode sends energy to your extremities making you strong enough to lift the car off your child or out run a thief who wants your purse. But you can’t fight the boss or run away from your job, so it is important to find a way to keep yourself in right as right mode.
There is no quicker or more beneficial way to get right with your body than breath training. I say training because you’ll have to make it a habit so that you remember to use breathing as a stress relief tool.  Fight or flight mode sends blood to the extremities making it harder to think. That’s why it’s so easy to forget to breath! Forming a habit takes about 21 days of consistent behavior. To get a good start, make a list of things that stress you out the most in your job (or other aspects of life). If you’re drawing a blank, here are some ideas – getting to work on time; traffic; co workers; conversations with the boss, clients or co workers; deadlines; sales quotas; bills; debt; abrasive people; significant others; spouses; siblings; parents and children.
Keep your list in a prominent place. If privacy is an issue, keep the list in a desk drawer or some other easy to access location. The list is helpful because often we don’t realize when a stressor has been activated. When you notice the stress building, view your list. If several or many things have happened, you probably should have done your six breaths sooner, it’s a learning process. Take your 6 breaths while holding your forehead if you can. Some circumstances may not allow for holding your forehead so in that case just breathe. You’ll need to do your 6 breaths about 12 times a day in the beginning. After a couple of weeks you’ll be amazed at how the stress will seem to melt away. Eventually, stressors on your list will bother you less. Then massages will be more relaxing and spa treatments will feel more like heaven than haven from the stress in your life.
There’s not really any magic bullet, just the magic of the breath!

Enjoy Yourself,
